About Me

My name is Jonathan Dovaston and I started Prime Cameras out of frustration for a particular industry. I’m an IT Technician by trade and a Kizomba Dancer & Instructor by passion.

As a dancer, I wanted to be able to relive those moments, whether it be dancing with my partner, teaching, having fun. My solution? I bought a camera.

In fact, I bought 3 cameras. The first one was an older Sony a5000 which could film in 1080p 60i. (“i” means interlaced, for those of you that don’t know.) I thought “Great!”, I have a proper camera, I can finally get some decent video footage. How wrong I was. The video quality was worse than the fingernail-sized sensor in my phone, and that genuinely caught me by surprise. At this stage, I realised I needed to do some REAL research.

Weeks of research finally led me to a new camera, the Sony ZV1. Now, don’t get me wrong, this is genuinely a great camera and you can accomplish a lot with it. One of my reels even reached over 1m views with this camera. The problem is, it has some limitations. Firstly, it’s terrible in low light, so it really struggles in a dim room. In a dark room, don’t even try. These limitations were a blessing in disguise as it forced me to learn everything I could about Shutter Speed, Aperture and ISO as I pushed it to the limits of its low light capability.

Eventually, I’d had enough of the limitation, but what I learnt during that process was far more valuable since it led me to understand what I really needed to achieve the quality of work I desired.

The winding road came to an end when I held a Sony a6700 for the first time. I could go into detail and start nerding out about what makes this camera so good, but I’d rather let the work speak for itself.

Long story short, I just wanted nice videos to share. And the route I took was to spend a small fortune on camera equipment. Perhaps not the wisest decision I ever made. However, this led me to where I am today. Passionate about dance, and passionate about capturing those moments in a way that the feeling can still be felt.
